Session Description
We are living through a historic storm of digital noise. In complex organizations, the average leader spends over 1,200 hours a year on non-face-to-face communication—yet much of this time is lost to “workslop”: emails, reports and updates that fail to establish a clear bottom line. Now, as generative AI makes writing completely effortless, the volume of uninspired, synthetic “walls of text” is accelerating.
For professional mentors and executive coaches, this presents a critical operational challenge: How do we help our clients maintain their authentic strategic voice, cut through the noise and guide their teams clearly when the digital void is constantly pulling them back?
In this high-value, interactive 60-minute session, IMC Certified Master Mentor Jorma Manninen takes you inside Part I of his book, Messaging Made Agile. You will move far beyond the mechanics of “writing” to master the strategic discipline of message architecture. You will learn to master “Step Zero”—the prerequisite, human-led strategy that must occur before anyone touches a keyboard or prompts an AI tool.
By equipping yourself with these precision communication models, you will gain a robust, repeatable toolkit to help your coaching and mentoring clients build self-reliant teams, clarify organizational alignment and protect their relationship capital.
What Participants Will Gain
1. Mastering “Step Zero” (The Pilot vs. The Passenger)
- The Concept: In an era where generative AI can write grammatically perfect but strategically hollow text (“workslop”), a leader’s authentic strategic voice is their ultimate competitive advantage.
- The Takeaway: Leaders must transition from “Passengers” who passively accept generic AI-generated drafts to “Pilots” who command the strategic controls. AI is a high-performance engine, but it cannot think; human strategy, empathy and accountability must always come first.
2. Establishing the “Commander’s Intent”
- The Concept: Most business communication fails because the writer stops at a weak, passive “activity” goal (e.g., “I am writing to inform the team”), which fails to drive action.
- The Takeaway: Before writing, a strategist must define a precise desired outcome. This is the Statement of the End State of the Commander’s Intent—the specific, measurable action you want the reader to take. This clarity ensures that even when operational plans change, the team still understands the ultimate mission.
3. Running the “5 Ws” Audience Audit
- The Concept: Precision communication is a direct application of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), specifically the domain of Social Awareness.
- The Takeaway: Rather than writing to “get things off their chest” (author-centric), leaders must use EQ to analyze and predict their audience’s power position, trust level, and emotional state. This analysis allows them to solve the reader’s ultimate question: What’s in it for me? (WIIFM).
4. Selecting the Message Strategy (The Traffic Light Model)
- The Concept: A brilliant idea will be ignored if it is hidden inside a confusing structure. The correct structure of a message is never determined by its topic; it is determined strictly by the audience’s predicted emotional reaction.
- The Takeaway: The lecture introduces the Traffic Light Model to structure messages strategically:
- Direct Structure (Green Light): Delivers the main point first (Bottom Line Up Front / BLUF). This is the default structure for 90% of positive or non-sensitive business messages to receptive audiences, prioritizing speed and respect for the reader’s time.
- Hybrid Structure (Yellow Light): Opens with a supportive context buffer to build a logical case before delivering the main request. This is ideal for persuading skeptical internal audiences.
- Indirect Structure (Red Light): Establishes the rationale first and the bad news second. It minimizes defensiveness and preserves relationships when delivering difficult or disappointing news to external stakeholders.
- Style & Stickiness: Leaders will learn to calibrate their message’s unique voice across four core styles (Rallying Cry, Clear Directive, Diplomatic Shield, Corporate Authority), while using the neurobiology of the SUCCES stickiness model (Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, Stories) to ensure their ideas activate the reader’s reward circuit.
5. Applying the Agile Communicator’s Razor (The Ultimate Filter)
- The Concept: The definitive plain-language filter used to ruthlessly strip away conversational and corporate fluff.
- The Takeaway: To ensure it is structurally impossible to be misunderstood, every strategic message must answer three foundational questions for the reader instantly:
- What? (The Facts): The objective reality and factual data.
- So What? (The Relevance): The impact, interpretation and why it matters to them.
- Now What? (The Action): The precise, actionable next step.
